Before you can pay employees, make sure you've registered for the applicable work and live in state. This can sometimes take several weeks—the sooner you start the process, the sooner you'll have the tax account information required to pay them.
Note, CertiPay Online can put your account in an applied for status. This may cause additional monthly fees as some states do not accept returns/tax liability deposits for accounts that are in an applied for status.

Eligibility Requirements
Your company becomes liable for state unemployment insurance tax once the company has:
- Paid $1500 in wages during a calendar quarter
- Had an employee working at least one day during a 20 week period
Register with the Maine Department of Labor
1. On the ReEmployMe site, click the Register a new Business link.
2. Enter your information to start the registration of your user.
3. Follow the next prompts for the company's information. Once each page is complete, click the Next button.
Your Employer Account Number will be provided within 5-7 business days.
Register with the Maine Revenue Services
1. Register on the Maine Tax Portal
2. Scroll down to the Businesses section and click Register a Business
3. If you have not created a user profile, then click Create a Username.
4. Follow the remaining prompts regarding your company information.
Once the registration is complete, you will be mailed the account number associated to your account within 20 days.
